Understanding Types of Parent Visas

Contributory Parent 143

Permanent residence for eligible parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. Higher DHA charges with generally faster processing than non-contributory options.

Contributory Parent (Temporary) 173

A temporary step that allows time in Australia and can lead to the 143.

Aged Parent 804

Onshore permanent option for parents who meet age requirements and are in Australia at lodgement. Queue times are long. Bridging arrangements may apply.

Parent 103

Offshore permanent option with lower government charges than contributory visas but very long queues.

Contributory Aged Parent 864

Onshore contributory pathway for parents who meet age requirements. Typically faster than non-contributory onshore options.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) 870

Longer visits to Australia for parents of eligible children. No balance of family test, but sponsorship and income rules apply. Not a pathway to permanent residence.
During your consultation we explain eligibility, timing, costs, and the trade-offs between these options, then recommend the best fit for your family.

Parent Visa Eligibility

You may be eligible if you:
Have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia
Meet the balance of family test for most permanent parent visas
Satisfy health and character requirements
Have a sponsor who meets sponsorship obligations. For contributory pathways, an assurance of support may be required
Common evidence: identity and family links, proof your child is settled in Australia, financial and relationship records, and health or character documents. We provide a tailored checklist and templates to keep everything tidy and complete.

Parent Visa FAQs

Contributory vs non-contributory - what is the difference?

Contributory visas have higher government charges and generally shorter queues.

Non-contributory visas cost less but usually take far longer.

Do I need to meet the balance of family test?
Yes for most permanent parent visas. The 870 temporary visa does not require it, but it is not a PR pathway.
Can I apply onshore?
Some visas allow onshore lodgement if you meet the criteria and hold a suitable visa. Age rules and visa conditions apply. We recommend the safest strategy for you.
What is an assurance of support?
A financial commitment sometimes needed for parent visas. We explain who can provide it, when it is required, and how it affects timing.
How long will it take?
Timeframes vary and can change. We discuss current trends and set realistic expectations in your consultation.
Do you guarantee outcomes?
No. Decisions are made by the Department of Home Affairs. Our role is to provide accurate advice, strong preparation, and clear communication as your parent visa migration agent.
